NEWSLETTER AUTOMNE 25

Summer is slowly coming to an end, and I feel deeply rejuvenated. The three weeks I spent in Banff, Alberta, Canada, for the Jazz & Sonic Arts program were a wonderful experience. Being surrounded by mountains, rivers, and light that changes minute by minute, in the company of artists each more inspiring than the last, has given me a wonderful burst of energy that I intend to enjoy as much as possible. I am delighted to be slowly entering September with some wonderful premieres, lots of projects getting back on track, and others blossoming during upcoming residencies.

NAWĀ PREMIERE IN JAZZ STATION 31/10

I am delighted to announce the premiere of Nawā, a project that is particularly close to my heart. Last year, Jazz Station gave me carte blanche, and I decided to invite singer and oud player Sarra Douik to take part. Unfortunately, we were unable to meet as planned last fall, but we developed a remote composition process, sending each other ideas to work on together. Next October, the four of us—Sarra, Zé Almeida on double bass, Pierre Hurty on drums, and myself—will finally have the pleasure of coming together for the premiere of this new collaboration.

In Arabic, Nawā means both “seed” and “intention”, sharing the spirit of the music; a core where diverse influences meet together and a shared desire to tell stories through it. At the root of our poetic intent, our seed is a reflection on trees. A poem written by Sarra speaks of an old tree passing water, air, and the wisdom of its life to the younger ones around it. As a seed, Nawā symbolizes origin and essence, the inner core of who we are between layers of inherited culture, history and memory. As an intention, the word evokes the will to move, to cross boundaries and to imagine a different future. In this dual meaning, “nawā” captures the tension between rootedness and motion, memory and transmission, and becomes the metamorphosis of lives shaped by migration, displacement and the search for self through changing landscapes.

DOUBLE BILL

at MARNI JAZZ FESTIVAL

I am very happy to have been invited by two artists with carte blanche at the Marni Jazz Festival to help them create their new repertoires. I will be alongside alejandra borzyk, Diogo Alexandre, Benoît Quentin, and Maria João for the premiere of Tremor on September 12, and a few days later with Fabrizio Cassol, Rodriguez Vangama, and Ezgi Elkirmis on the 18th. If you are in Brussels, don't miss these wonderful evenings!

LE CHATEAU DES CARPATHES

NEWSLETTER ÉTÉ 25

Summer is just around the corner and I'm delighted to share my upcoming events with you! The coming weeks, we'll have a taste of chamber music and string quartets in particular. On June 5, the Franco-Polish quartet AËTHER will premiere with Amalia Umeda, Aleksandra Kryńska (violins) and Maëlle Desbrosses (viola) at the Jazzdor Berlin festival, and on June 29 at the Letnia Akademia Jazzu in Lódz (PL).  I'll then be joining the Kaija Quartet on June 7 in Montmartre for a special evening prepared by us as part of the Nuit Blanche de Paris. Then it's off to the Aix-en-Provence Festival for a premiere with the La Meute collective on June 14. The show will feature short adaptations of Carmen (Bizet) and Don Giovanni (Mozart), the fruit of a collective creative effort involving over 150 people from the festival's partner structures.

The summer will be a travelling one, with the pleasure of taking part in the INTL Jazz Platform in Lódz (PO) and then heading to the Centre for Arts & creativity in BANFF (CA) for three weeks of residencies, workshops and encounters. And last but not least, you'll find below a selection of concerts with groups and friends I'm particularly fond of: Alejandra Borzyk, Zé Almeida, Jawa Manla, the Trium Viret, the trio Notes on the memory of notes (Bianchi, Cassol, Viret) and my quartet “Adèle Viret Quartet”.

LA NUIT BLANCHE DU QUATUOR KAIJA

The Kaija Quartet is preparing a very special evening for the Nuit Blanche de Paris on June 7. We will play for 6 consecutive hours at the Église St-Pierre de Montmartre, presenting the quartet's repertoire, including Kaija Saariaho's Terra Memoria, Cage's 44 Harmonies, Bryce Dessner's Aheym, and pieces by Théodore Vibert, Paco Andreo and Victor Maisonneuve written especially for the quartet, moments of solo and duo improvisation, music from the North with Arvo Pärt, Meshuggah and Woodworks Danish folk songs transcribed for string quartet, and we'll have the pleasure of being joined by dancer and performer Claire Lamothe.

The quartet also appeared on France Musique on May 31. The podcast is available for replay and features a performance of Kaija Saariaho's quartet “Terra Memoria”, and you can hear some of us at the microphone of Clément Rochefort.

NEW ENDORSMENT WITH GEWA AND SUPPORT FROM SACEM
